Darren Bent has revealed that Aston Villa striker Douglas Luiz had him “screaming” at the TV in the club’s win over Everton on Friday night.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa and England striker says that he was hugely impressed with what he saw from the Brazilian hitman after grabbing his first goal for Dean Smith’s men.
The 22-year-old opened the scoring with a low finish past Jordan Pickford before Anwar El Ghazi sealed all three points in injury time.
However, Bent admitted that the Villans’ new star striker had him raising his voice in frustration when he was played through one-on-one for a second time, his shot saved at point-blank range by Pickford.
Bent told Football Insider: “When he went through the second time I was screaming at my TV: ‘Shoot earlier, shoot earlier!’ At the end of the day, the first one was a great finish.
“I thought he played really well, you can see why they paid all that money on him. What I liked about last night, he’s a big target man – for the first 10, 15 minutes he bullied those centre-halves.
“By the end of the game, they didn’t want to go anywhere near him.”
Wesley had started Villa’s previous two games of the season without finding the back of the net, having joined the newly-promoted side with 38 goals in 130 appearances for Club Brugge.
Villa’s next game sees them take on Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup, while their next league game is an away trip to Crystal Palace.
