Exclusive: Darren Bent stunned as Chelsea plot shock raid to sign 'Outstanding' 26-yr-old
Darren Bent admits he is baffled as Chelsea plot a surprise move to sign Manchester City defender John Stones this summer.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 26-year-old is the wrong sort of signing for the Blues.
As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday, Chelsea have turned their attention on making a shock move for the City ace as Frank Lampard looks for a new senior centre-back.
Stones has fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola and has played just 24 times across all competitions this season.
Bent admits that the England defender is a fantastic technical player but insists that he lacks the defensive nous Chelsea have been desperately lacking this season.
Asked if Stones would be a good signing for Chelsea, Bent told Football Insider: “No, no! Listen, what’s Chelsea’s problem been this season? They can’t defend. What’s John Stones’ problem been? He can’t defend.

“I don’t get it, honestly, I do not get it sometimes with certain managers. Surely Lampard would look at John Stones – as we’ve said before, outstanding footballer, technically he can pass the ball, brilliant on the eye, superb but he makes mistakes.
“Surely Frank Lampard must be looking at Guardiola, who would rather put a holding midfield player ahead of John Stones. We’re talking about Chelsea maybe getting back to the level where they’re competing with Manchester City.
“That doesn’t happen by buying Manchester City’s players who they don’t think are good enough. Stranger things have happened but that’s just one I can’t see. To me it makes no sense.”
Stones has made just 12 Premier League starts this season, with only two of those since the top-flight restart.
Lampard started Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta in a back-three for the Blues’ 5-3 defeat to Liverpool, while he also has Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen as centre-back options.
