West Brom have been urged by Darren Bent to sign a “more natural goalscorer” than Troy Deeney to lead the line in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former England striker claimed the Baggies will create a lot of opportunities this season and need a “fox in the box” to finish them.
Football Insider revealed last week that West Brom are in advanced talks to sign the 32-year-old who has attracted interest from Tottenham this summer.
The newly promoted side are in pole position to land Deeney’s signature as they are able to offer him regular game time while Spurs are in the market for back up to Harry Kane.
Bent told Football Insider: “This is a bit of a funny one for me, because I like Troy and I think he’s a very good powerful centre forward.
“But I think they’ve got a couple of them there already in (Hal) Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin and Callum Robinson’s just signed too but I know he’s different.
“I would like to see West Brom get a more natural goalscorer, a more proven goalscorer. With everything Deeney does well, which is hold the ball up, he’s a menace, he wins his headers, but his goal return has not been great, he scores a lot of penalties.
“I believe they need somebody who is more a fox in the box type player because (Grady) Diangana and (Matheus) Pereira will create a lot of opportunities but I would like to see them go and get someone to put them in the net.
“For West Brom it’s a great signing but it’s an interesting one.”
