Derby County are ready to battle arch-rivals Nottingham Forest to sign Wigan Athletic attacker Gavin Massey on a free transfer this summer, Football Insider understands.
The wide forward, 26, is one of the most sought-after free agents in the Championship this summer with his contract at Wigan due to expire in June.
A Derby source has told Football Insider the club have now expressed an interest in Massey, who scored against them last month at Pride Park, after tracking him this term.
Frank Lampard’s sign could be shopping in the free agent market if they do not win promotion from the Championship this season.
The source explained that Wigan are keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old, who has played a key role in them securing safety in the Championship this season, but they are aware of the growing interest in the Massey from rival Championship clubs.
The skilful winger enhanced his reputation with interested suitors with a match-winning double in Athletic’s shock 2-1 win at Leeds on Good Friday to bring his tally for the season to five goals and one assist in 19 appearances in the Championship.
Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers have made Massey one of their top targets this summer as they look to add to their attacking options.
In other Championship transfer news, it can be REVEALED that promotion challengers have set their sights on signing two Liverpool players who have dazzled this season.
