Everton defender Matthew Pennington is poised to join Ipswich Town after agreeing the terms of a loan move, Football Insider sources understands.

Ipswich are looking to bolster their defensive options before the close of the transfer window and they have lined up a last-gasp deal for Pennington.

The 23-year-old, who can play at centre-back or right-back spent, last season on loan at Leeds making 24 appearances during his time at Elland Road.

A number of clubs including Leeds, Blackburn and Wigan have expressed an interest in taking Pennington on loan this season, but Ipswich are now set to win the race for the defender’s signature.

The defender has come through the ranks at Everton and he is very highly-regarded at Goodison Park having signed a new three-year deal at the club in May.

However, he is well down the pecking order in Marco Silva’s first-team plans this season and they are happy to loan him so that he can get regular first-team football under his belt.

In other news, Football Insider can reveal the club have been working on a deal to sign a Derby County player.
