Exclusive: Hutton makes big Rangers selection claim ahead of EL clash v Leverkusen
Alan Hutton has tipped Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield to return to the starting lineup for their crucial Europa League last 16 second leg clash with Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday.
The former Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, suggested Gers manager Steven Gerrard will select the Canadian over Steven Davis, who missed their opening day victory at Aberdeen through injury.
Glen Kamara is suspended for the tie, meaning that Gerrard will need to reshuffle the pack ahead of his side’s trip to Germany.
And Hutton believes Arfield’s energy will give him the edge over Davis, as Rangers look to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg.
“Davis was injured for the Aberdeen game with a slight knock, so you would maybe think Arfield will come in,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Again, you wouldn’t want to throw somebody not fully fit into such a big tie, so Gerrard has got a couple of decisions to make.

“I do believe that if Rangers get the first goal, they can cause an upset but it’s going to be really tough.
“He’ll want to pick a team that can go forward and attack but also keep the back door shut. Arfield is that up and down type of player that can offer that energy.”
The Gers lost 3-1 to the Bundesliga side in the first leg at Ibrox, and will finally play the return on Thursday at the BayArena.
The coronavirus pandemic caused a huge delay between the two matches and Gerrard has been forced to make changes to his squad.
Wes Foderingham, Matt Polster, Sheyi Ojo, Andy Halliday and Florian Kamberi have all left since the first leg.
However, registration rules mean the Rangers boss can’t replace them with any of his summer signings.
UEFA allow teams to add three players, but they must have been already registered and eligible to play for the club at domestic level since 3 February.
