Exclusive: Alan Hutton stunned by what he heard from Dean Smith about Villa players
Alan Hutton admits he was stunned to hear Dean Smith speak about the Aston Villa players in the way he did after the club’s defeat to Southampton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa and Scotland star revealed he has never seen the manager act the way he did last Saturday, even on the training ground.
Smith gave his players both barrels after suffering a 2-0 loss at St Mary’s, calling the performance “embarrassing” and saying he has “too many training ground players” in the squad.
Having worked under the former Brentford boss following his appointment in 2018, Hutton admits he could barely believe he was hearing from his old manager on Saturday.
Asked if he was stunned by the 48-year-old’s comments, Hutton told Football Insider: “Yeah. I’ve never, never once heard him (like that).
“Even in training, he wouldn’t ever question the players like that. It shows you how frustrated he was. It was a massive game for Villa and to be honest they were poor.

“It’s a difficult one, he’s come out and questioned the players, whether they had an eye on the final or what kind of went wrong, he was obviously upset with the performance. You understand, it’s an emotional game, emotions were running at a high level.”
Villa will be hoping to bounce back from defeat to Southampton with a surprise victory over Manchester City in the League Cup final on Sunday.
The Villans return to league duty over a week later with a visit to Leicester City.
In other Aston Villa news, Hutton has dropped an update about John McGinn after a chat ahead of the League Cup final.
