Exclusive: Joe Rothwell could leave Rangers in January as English clubs race to deal

Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell could leave the club next month amid interest from English teams, sources have told Football Insider.

The 30-year-old has struggled for minutes since the arrival of Danny Rohl as manager.

That has opened the door to a potential January move for the midfielder, who is being monitored by multiple English teams.

Rothwell was signed last summer by former Ibrox manager Russell Martin, but has slipped down the pecking order in recent weeks.

The former Leeds and Bournemouth man finds himself behind the likes of Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron for a midfield spot.

Rangers could be open to offloading him to boost their own transfer plans and raise cash for new arrivals.

Danny Rohl has totally snubbed Joe Rothwell

Rohl’s arrival has prompted resurgences for the likes of Mikey Moore, but Rothwell is someone whose fortunes have slipped in the opposite direction.

The veteran is a highly experienced campaigner, having played a crucial role for Leeds in their promotion to the Premier League last term, but he has been unable to make an impact north of the border.

Martin worked with him at Southampton during their Championship promotion campaign in 2023-24, and initially, he was an important figure at Ibrox under his guidance.

However, since Rohl has taken the reins, he has almost totally snubbed Rothwell, who has found opportunities to impress extremely hard to come by.

The midfielder is yet to play a single minute of Premiership action under the German, who has only started him once, and that came in the 3-0 Europa League defeat to Brann in his first game in charge.

Nicolas Raskin may follow Rothwell out the door at Rangers

Football Insider exclusively revealed earlier this week that Rangers will find it hard to reject a bid for Raskin in January, amid interest from Tottenham.

The Belgian is a key performer for the Glasgow giants, but he could yet be about to follow Rothwell out of the door when the window opens in a matter of weeks.

The Gers’ desire to raise funds for their own transfer dealings is clearly strong, and a sale of Raskin would likely see them set a significant sum to strengthen their hand in the market.

Rohl won’t want to lose the 24-year-old given the importance that he carries, but he may be left with little choice if an attractive offer comes in.
