Kevin Phillips has claimed that Leeds United could be in danger of losing Marcelo Bielsa to a top European club if they don’t tie him down to a new contract soon.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Jason Jones, the former England international admitted that he was amazed the club hadn’t already moved to ensure the Argentine’s future at Elland Road.
As yet, the 65-year-old has not put pen to paper on an extension to his most recent deal with the Whites, which expired at the end of last season.
Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear has openly claimed that a new contract is “very, very close” to being announced, but Phillips has suggested that things must be wrapped up as soon as possible.
When asked whether there was a chance that Bielsa could be targeted by other clubs if his future isn’t decided soon during an interview with Football Insider, he said: “There’s every possibility. Nothing surprises me in football anymore.
“If a top European club came in for him, would it shock me? Probably not given the reputation that he’s got in world football – and certainly European football – the players he’s worked with, the results he’s got, taking Leeds up this season. The play we saw from Leeds at times this season was incredible.
“There’s every opportunity it could happen if they don’t get their finger out and get him tied down. It amazes me that it hasn’t been done already.
“He is his own man, he can be a bit stubborn, and I’m sure it will get sorted, but the longer it goes on, the more Leeds will be getting worried.”
Bielsa guided Leeds to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years this summer when his side won the Championship by 10 clear points.
The Whites faced similar uncertainty over the Argentine’s future at the end of last season, but eventually agreed a 12-month extension on his contract at Elland Road.
In other Leeds United news, the club have agreed a blockbuster new deal and an announcement is imminent.
