Exclusive: Kevin Phillips reacts as senior figure makes Leeds transfer admission

Kevin Phillips says that Leeds United should be able to seal promotion if they can avoid injuries and suspensions until the end of the season.

The former West Brom and Sunderland hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor, says that Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to work with a small squad leaves little wiggle room in case of absences.

The Argentine boss confirmed at his press conference that Jean-Kevin Augustin would be the final arrival at Elland Road this month, having brought in young goalkeeper Elia Caprile and winger Ian Poveda earlier in the window.

Phillips says that it could be a risk not bolstering his side with more bodies but says that the quality Bielsa does have should be enough to get them back to the Premier League.

Phillips told Football Insider: “I think when you read about Leeds and Bielsa has said at the time that he doesn’t like a huge squad, does he? He likes to work with a small squad and it nearly got them out the Championship last year.

“This year, you can’t legislate for any injuries between now and the end of the season, any suspensions so he believes he’s got a good enough squad to go up, if he can keep everyone fit.

“Of course we’ve seen this season that, with the addition of Augustin and Poveda, two good signings, it creates competition. I expect Leeds to get over this slump and really kick on until the end of the season.”

Leeds returned to the top of the table on Tuesday with a dramatic 3-2 win over Millwall, the Lions taking a 2-0 lead at Elland Road in the first half.

A Patrick Bamford brace and a Pablo Hernandez strike secured the three points for the home side on a night where fellow title hopefuls West Brom lost to Cardiff City.

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that Rangers have made an offer for a giant at Elland Road.
