Exclusive: Leicester City to land minimum six-point deduction
Leicester City are likely to be deducted at least six points after being charged with a profit and sustainability (PSR) breach, sources have told Football Insider.
The Premier League side were initially charged in March 2024 with a spending breach after reporting losses of £90million for 2022-23, with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
However, it has been confirmed they will not face any punishment for their 2022-23 breach after exploiting a loophole in the rules.
Leicester have now been charged with an alleged breach of the EFL’s financial rules for 2023-24 when they secured promotion back to the Premier League.
The Foxes have been referred to an independent commission, leaving them facing a potential points deduction following their relegation to the Championship.
Everton were previously handed six and two-point deductions following their PSR breaches, while Nottingham Forest’s penalty was reduced to four points for cooperating with the case.
Sources have told Football Insider Leicester are expected to be charged with an aggravated breach and are likely to face at least a six-point deduction, with the panel holding the power to hand out a larger punishment.

Leicester hit by £72m blow
The Premier League and EFL recently moved to tighten the financial rules to prevent clubs moving between the top two divisions from avoiding potential spending breaches.
Leicester suffered a £72million hit last season after their turnover fell from £177million in 2022-23 to £105million.
Meanwhile, their losses dropped from £90million to £19million in 2023-24, but it hasn’t proven enough to avoid a PSR breach.
The Foxes’ spending limit for the three-year cycle up to 2023-24 was £83million as the cap drops from £35million a season in the Premier League to £13million in the Championship.
In a statement responding to the latest charges, Leicester said: “The club intends to engage co-operatively in this matter now that the Premier League’s jurisdiction has been established for the period ending FY24.”

The Foxes are closing in on a deal that would see the former Southampton boss named as Ruud van Nistelrooy’s successor.
Several candidates have been considered for the role, but the 39-year-old’s experience in leading the Saints to promotion last season is seen as a valuable asset.
