Exclusive: Liverpool coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst is contender for available manager’s job

Liverpool assistant coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst is under consideration for the Indonesia manager vacancy, sources have told Football Insider.

The Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) are in the process of finding a new head coach following the dismissal of Patrick Kluivert last month in the wake of the country’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Indonesia have close ties with the Dutch with an ever-growing pool of naturalised heritage players in the Indonesia camp being Dutch-born.

Former Rangers and Besiktas boss Van Bronckhorst joined Liverpool in the summer to work in Arne Slot‘s coaching staff.

He joined as a replacement for John Heitinga following his departure to Ajax. However, Heitinga has recently been sacked by Ajax following their poor start to the season.

Liverpool exit edging closer after contact made

Despite making it to round four of the AFC group stage qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, Indonesia suffered two gut-wrenching defeats to Saudi Arabia and Iraq which ruined their hopes.

Now, the Football Association is turning its attention to the next international tournament with the 2027 Asian Cup offering an opportunity of redemption.

Given the Dutchman’s history working with Feyenoord, Guangzhou City, Rangers and Besiktas, accruing a 58 per cent win rate, his exit from Liverpool is now seen as a possibility.

Liverpool have now lost six matches in the Premier League this season, already more than their title-winning four defeats in 2024-25.

Former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that Slot must turn around Liverpool’s poor form.

Whilst whispers of a possible sacking are not out of the question, the Dutchman will certainly be given more time, especially with the influx of so many new faces at Anfield from last summer.

Chemistry is clearly lacking for the Reds as they aim to resurrect their inconsistent start to their title defence.
