Kevin Phillips has tipped Georginio Wijnaldum to leave Liverpool before the transfer window closes after he rejected the club’s latest contract offer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner suggested that the 29-year-old thinks that a move is “on the cards” this summer.
The midfielder has entered the final nine months of his contract at Anfield having signed a five-year deal upon his arrival from Newcastle United in 2016.
Football Insider revealed last week that the Netherlands international has rejected a new long-term contract but is set to remain at the club this season.
Wijnaldum has started the first two Premier League fixtures of the 2020/21 campaign for Jurgen Klopp’s side and appears to remain an integral part of his plans.
However, Phillips is adamant that the centre-midfielder will look to leave the club before the transfer window shuts on 5 October.
“It is up to the player now,” he told Football Insider.
“Thiago has come in and played really well so all of a sudden he has a decision to make. Does Wijnaldum take the contract offer or sit there for a year and probably do not play every week. He would probably sit on the bench and become a bit of an outcast if he does not sign a new deal. It is a tough situation to be in.
“He possibly thought there was a move on the cards and thought it would happen in the next two weeks.
“Liverpool will dictate it. They always do and they will get what they want for him. I imagine that Wijnaldum will not be at Anfield come the end of the window.”
