Danny Mills has claimed that Dwight Gayle will want to leave Newcastle United before the end of the summer in a hunt for regular playing time next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and England defender says that the striker does not look to have much of a part to play in Steve Bruce’s squad for the upcoming season, having spent last year on loan at West Brom.
The Newcastle boss has spoken out about his desire to keep the 28-year-old at St James’ Park, the new manager admitting he is a huge fan of his talents, but the hitman has been linked with a move back to the Championship before the end of the transfer window.
Mills says that Gayle himself will be wanting to play regularly and insists that is not going to happen on Tyneside, the Magpies having brought in Joelinton as their new first-choice striker.
Mills told Football Insider: “He’ll want to play, it’s as simple as that. Every player wants to play. He knows the way Newcastle are going, he’s unlikely to feature in many games.
“Even if there’s injuries, he might still be on the bench, so at this stage of his career he’ll want to play.
Gayle has played 71 times for Newcastle since joining from Crystal Palace, the majority of his 29 goals coming in their Championship-winning campaign.
Last season saw him continue to shine in the second tier of English football, with 24 goals in 40 league appearances, including the play-off semi-finals.
In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that a north west side are plotting to raid the Magpies for one of their international stars.
