Exclusive: Millwall & Coventry failed in late moves to sign Humphreys

Millwall and Coventry had deadline-day enquiries for ex-Manchester City defender Cameron Humphreys rebuffed by Belgian club Zulte Waregem, Football Insider can reveal.

Humphreys, who moved to Belgium with Zulte from City in 2019, has impressed this season and been named in several Teams of the Week in the Jupiler League.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Millwall and Coventry were keen to lure him back to England for the second half of the season.

But Zulte were determined to keep hold of him as the moves were knocked back.

The 22-year-old has played 17 times for the Belgian side who currently sit in 10th in the Belgian top-flight.

He made his debut for City as a 16-year-old in a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid but played just two competitive games for the club – both in the FA Cup.

Both Millwall and Coventry were busy during the window but neither side were able to add a central defender.

They are both looking over their shoulder in the Championship and Coventry in particular have a poor defensive record.

The Sky Blues have conceded 37 goals in 27 league games – the third-highest number in the division behind bottom side Wycombe Wanderers and Huddersfield Town.

They added teenage left-back Josh Reid, midfielder Matty James and forward Fabio Tavares during the window.

Millwall brought in midfield pair George Evans and Maikel Kieftenbeld on permanent deals after missing out on former loanee Jayson Molumby.
