Exclusive: Newcastle United in talks to agree double signing after hijack

Newcastle are holding talks over deals for a new goalkeeper and a centre-forward, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies have struggled in the transfer market so far this summer, missing out on a number of targets.

Eddie Howe’s side looked all set to bring in James Trafford from Burnley before Manchester City hijacked the deal, which leaves the Tyneside club searching for another option between the sticks.

In terms of a striker, Newcastle were heavily linked with Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt before Liverpool swooped in and agreed a deal.

The north-east giants are continuing to work behind the scenes on these two key signings, and are believed to be negotiating over multiple deals as they look to get them over the finish line.

Eddie Howe left frustrated by Newcastle near misses

It has become a recurring theme this summer that Newcastle will look close to bringing a new signing to St James’ Park, just to be usurped in the final moments.

Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, Mohammed Kudus, and Liam Delap were all major targets for Howe’s side, but each of them were snapped up by Premier League rivals.

Over the last 18 months, Newcastle made barely any notable signings, but many thought that the dry spell would finally come to an end in this window.

However, despite signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, it has been an underwhelming summer to say the least.

Magpies fans will be hoping that the Tyneside club can get at least a few deals over the line, ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Newcastle will accept offers for attacker

Meanwhile, Newcastle are reportedly prepared to listen to offers for Harvey Barnes this summer.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who claims that the 27-year-old has been pushed down the pecking order under Eddie Howe.

The winger has struggled to establish himself as a regular first-XI player while competing with Anthony Gordon, who will remain the first-choice alongside Elanga.

This comes after Football Insider revealed in May that Barnes could be interested in leaving Newcastle in search of more regular first-team football alongside Joe Willock.
