Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has been lined up to join League One Oxford United this month, Football Insider sources understands.
A well placed source has told Football Insider that Oxford have made contact with the Premier League giants about signing the England Under-20s World Cup winner.
Oxford are in the market for a possible new goalkeeper with current No.1 Simon Eastwood a target for Barnsley in this month’s transfer window and Woodman has emerged as their top target to replace Eastwood should he leave.
Woodman, who made his Newcastle debut in last weekend’s FA Cup win over Luton Town with a heroic performance in a 3-1 win, is highly-rated within the corridors of power at St James’ Park.
The 20-year-old is third-choice goalkeeper at Newcastle and with the Magpies in the market for a new goalkeeper this month Woodman could find himself pushed further down the pecking order in Rafa Benitez’s plans.
Woodman has enjoyed spells out on loan at Hartlepool, Crawley Town and Kilmarnock during the last three seasons and the keeper is keen to go out on loan again and gain more first-team experience under his belt.
Newcastle are assessing their options regards Woodman, but they will only sanction a loan move for the England Under-21 international if they are to bring in a new keeper themselves before the close of the transfer window.
An agreement is close but not yet in place.
