Oldham Athletic are set to sign Salford City defender Carl Piergianni, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The 28-year-old is available on a free transfer after his contract with The Ammies expired last month.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the centre-half has agreed to return to League Two side Oldham.
He spent the second half of the 2019/20 season at Boundary Park and made 11 appearances to help the Latics to a 19th placed finish.
A move would see the Peterborough-born player remain in Greater Manchester, where he has spent the past three years and most of his career.
Piergianni joined Salford from A-League side Melbourne City in 2017 and went on to make 67 appearances for the club over a three-year period .
During the 2018/19 campaign he scored a remarkable 11 goals in 48 appearances and was pivotal to The Ammies promotion from the National League.
Earlier this week Oldham Athletic sacked Dino Maamria from his position as manager after just 10 months in charge, the club’s fifth boss in just two-and-a-half years.
Yesterday the Latics announced that they had appointed former Liverpool and Leeds winger Harry Kewell as their new manager and Piergianni looks set to become his second summer signing.
When speaking on his arrival, Kewell said: “The one thing I think this club does need is stability and if we can get that then we can start to grow things.”
Kewell will be tasked with plugging the second worst defence in the league, Oldham conceded 57 goals in 37 games last season, only Morecambe conceded more.
The club have already signed versatile defender Sido Jombati on a one-year deal.
In other League Two news, Bolton and Bradford City have opened talks to sign Portuguese winger.
