‘Shining light’ – Exclusive: Robinson raves over ‘Unlucky’ Spurs player he wants to see more of

Paul Robinson says that Tottenham wing-back Ryan Sessegnon has been “unlucky” not to feature more under Jose Mourinho.

The former Spurs and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 19-year-old has impressed during his few outings and that he has plenty to offer going forward.

The former Fulham man turned out for what was just his sixth appearance of the season on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw away at Norwich City.

Having seen the teenage talent also start against Brighton and Bayern Munich, Robinson says that Sessegnon can count himself a little hard done by that he has been sat on the bench or out of the squad.

Robinson told Football Insider: “I’ve been impressed with him.

“When he played in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, okay, they got beat and it wasn’t a team performance but it was one of his first starts and he was a shining light.

“Since then he’s been unlucky not to get any chances of a game. I’d have liked to see him play in a three with Lucas Moura and Dele Alli behind Harry Kane, but he chose to play him in a left wing-back position.

“Okay, it’s probably his preferred position anyway but I think he offers more offensively than defensively.”

Sessegnon has just six first-team appearances under his belt for Tottenham since his move across London this summer, Saturday just the second time he has seen out a game from start to finish.

In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent says that one player has “done himself no favours” in trying to convince Jose Mourinho.
