Exclusive: Paul Robinson 'Surprised' after Mourinho snubs Tottenham player

Paul Robinson admitted he was surprised Tottenham attacker Ryan Sessegnon didn’t start against Wolves on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Spurs keeper revealed he expected Sessegnon to start against Wolves after impressing against Bayern Munich.

Jose Mourinho opted to snub the 19-year-old winger on the Sunday with Sessegnon ending up being an unused substitute in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Wolves.

Robinson explained that Sessegnon was constantly a threat during the 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in mid-week, so should have been given an opportunity to play in the Premier League.

“I was surprised Sessegnon didn’t get a start against Wolves,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“Especially after the way he played in mid-week, he was a threat constantly and was generally very good against Bayern Munich.

“I thought he earned himself an opportunity.”

The Spurs teenage sensation has only appeared a total of four times for the North London club this season since joining from Fulham in the summer.

The start of Sessegnon’s 2019/20 campaign was disrupted by injury with a hamstring issue seeing him ruled out of the club’s opening ten league games.

The mid-week clash with Bayern Munich is the only time the 19-year-old has completed 90 minutes for the club, and it’s the match where he scored his first Spurs goal.

In his 2018/19 campaign when with Fulham, Sessegnon regularly featured in the Premier League with him making 35 appearances in the division.
