Peterborough are in pole position to sign Newport County defender Dan Butler, Football Insider understands.
Left-back Butler is out of contract at the Welsh club next month and has yet to agree a new deal with the Welsh club.
His availability has alerted a number of clubs to his potential availability on a free transfer and a Peterborough source has told Football Insider that the club are hopeful of winning the race to land the ex-Portsmouth man.
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson is a big admirer of Butler and sees him as a key addition to his plans for next season as he aims to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion from League One.
Butler is regarded as one of the best young defenders in the Football League and he has been a mainstay in the Newport side since arriving in 2016.
The 24-year-old has been a virtual ever-present for Newport this season making 59 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and six assists to help the Exiles reach the League Two Play-Off final.
