Noel Whelan has claimed West Ham have a “big advantage” in their bid to beat Everton to the signing of Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker explained how the London factor gives the Hammers a key selling point and claims they could be the “shock favourites” to sign him.
Both Premier League clubs are trying to land Gomes, 25, permanently this summer after his successful campaign on loan at Everton.
“A lot depends on how happy Gomes was at Everton last season,” Whelan told Football Insider. “One big advantage West Ham have is that a lot of players want to be in London.
“That appeals to international players who want a more cosmopolitan lifestyle. It’s an advantage compared to the northern clubs.
“Gomes will be looking at West Ham and Everton as pretty similar sized clubs. It all depends what he’s looking for. West Ham may be the shock favourites to get him.”
Everton manager Marco Silva has made no attempt to hide his eagerness to sign Gomes permanently after he impressed in the 29 matches he made for the club last season.
The 29-times Portugal international joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2016 but he was not a regular starter and the Spanish giants are willing to sell him for around £30million.
In other West Ham news, the club have rejected an approach from Premier League giants for 29-year-old.
