Alan Hutton has tipped Neil Lennon to set a deadline as Celtic try to thrash out a deal to sign Shane Duffy from Brighton this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Rangers and Scotland defender believes the Hoops boss will move onto other targets if a deal cannot be struck over “the next week or so”.
As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic held fresh talks with Brighton on Monday in a bid to get a loan move for the 28-year-old over the finish line.
Hutton believes that Lennon will not want negotiations to stretch out much longer, with the Premiership season already underway, and suggests that he could set a deadline before he moves on to his next target.
“It’s always going to be the situation with the wages, especially with an experienced Premier League player coming up to Scotland,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“I think the wages are always going to be an issue. I think it will rumble on for a certain amount of time but it looks like Lennon wants to bring someone in and you just have to look at the goalie situation.
“He wanted Forster but it was grumbling on and he said enough’s enough, we’ve tried, it’s not happening and he moved on. I’ve got a feeling he’ll take the same kind of stance, he’ll probably put a time frame on it and give them the next week or so to try and thrash it out.
“If not, he’s probably got his other targets that he’s looking at that he’ll move on to.”
Duffy has 96 Premier League appearances under his belt as well as 33 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Lennon has used Kristoffer Ajer, Christopher Jullien and Nir Bitton at centre-back so far this season.
In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED the club are on the brink of a new attacking signing.
