Exclusive: QPR agree to sign Newcastle’s Harrison Ashby

Newcastle United defender Harrison Ashby is set to join QPR after the two clubs agreed a loan deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Ashby is set to head down south as he prepares to spend the season at Loftus Road after terms have been confirmed.

The 22-year-old right-back joined the Magpies in January 2023 from West Ham United, but game time has been hard to come by.

The Scotland Under-21 international has yet to feature for Newcastle’s first-team but has played twice for the Under-21s.

Ashby had appeared seven times for West Ham’s first-team before moving, and he spent last season on loan at Swansea City.

Now the full-back will return to the Championship as part of Marti Cifuentes’ squad.

Newcastle United want Harrison Ashby to develop with regular playing time

Newcastle currently have plenty of competition in the full-back positions with the likes of Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall, and Tino Livramento, therefore a loan move will be beneficial for Ashby.

It guarantees him more playing time than he would receive under Eddie Howe this season, which Newcastle hopes will aid his development.

Ashby isn’t new to the Championship though as he played 13 times for Swansea last season in England’s second tier.

Ashby is predominantly a right-back, but he has played further up the pitch in right midfield several times throughout his career.

QPR will be back in action on Friday night (30 August) when they face Luton Town in the Championship.
