Exclusive: Rangers could land £5m annual windfall after Ibrox expansion update

Rangers could land an extra £5million a year if they decide to expand Ibrox’s capacity, sources have told Football Insider.

Rangers’ owners have been considering their stadium plans since securing their takeover of the club in May.

The Scottish giants announced on 25 November they have kicked off a feasibility study that will assess various improvements that could be made to the matchday experience at Ibrox, including a stadium expansion.

It is believed one of the options is for Rangers to add 4,000 new seats, increasing the capacity from 51,700 to more than 55,000.

Sources say Rangers could improve their matchday revenue by up to £5m if they push ahead with the expansion.

How much matchday revenue do Rangers generate?

There has been work undertaken at Ibrox recently, with Rangers heavily criticised following the delays around the development of the Copland Stand last year.

The Glasgow side were forced to play at Hampden Park in the opening weeks of last season due to the construction problems.

Rangers’ ownership group, which is led by chairman Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, are taking a more methodical approach to any future expansion plans after deciding to undertake the feasibility study.

An extra 4,000 seats would take Ibrox’s capacity closer to Celtic Park’s 60,411.

It is understood Rangers are considering adding more hospitality areas at their stadium, providing the matchday profits with a further boost.

Rangers posted their latest accounts for 2024-25 last month, showing their matchday income improved from £43.8m in 2023-24 to £45m.

That helped the club generate a record revenue, with their turnover improving from £88.3m to £94.1m.

Meanwhile, Rangers’ losses dropped slightly from £17.2m to £14.8m last season and their cash balance increased from £1.7m to £30.5m across the same period.

Rangers to appoint new leadership team after confirmed news

Rangers are looking to appoint a new leadership team while they consider their stadium plans.

It was confirmed last week the club have parted ways with Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell.

Stewart made the move to Ibrox as chief executive last December, while Thelwell was appointed as sporting director in April, with the deal completed once his contract at Everton expired in June.

Rangers fans protested against Thelwell and Stewart in recent weeks, blaming them for the failed appointment of Russell Martin and their dealings in the transfer market.

Danny Rohl has since been appointed as Martin’s replacement, with the new manager looking to help the club move up the Scottish Premiership table.

Rangers currently sit fourth, nine points behind league leaders Hearts, who are above Celtic on goal difference.
