Rangers are poised to make Alfredo Morelos the highest paid player at the club with a bumper new £30,000-a-week deal after crunch talks, Football Insider sources understands.
Rangers have moved to fend off interest from French sides Bordeaux and Marseille ahead of this week’s transfer deadline with a new contract to keep Morelos at Ibrox.
The Colombian’s representatives held talks with Steven Gerrard and Rangers officials last weekend to discuss a new deal and the striker is set to become Rangers’ top earner with a contract worth more than £1.5million-a-year.
Gers boss Gerrard has privately called on the board and chairman Dave King to pull out all the stops to secure Morelos’ future as he sees him as vital to his long-term plans at Ibrox.
Morelos, who joined Rangers last summer from HJK Helsinki, only signed a new deal in March, but Rangers are ready to reward him for rejecting interest from Bordeaux and Marseille with lucrative fresh new terms.
The 22-year-old finished last season as Rangers’ top scorer with 18 goals in his debut campaign for the club, and has started the new season in fine form with six goals in 11 games in all competitions.
In other Rangers news, Football Insider can reveal the Glasgow giants are pulling out all the stops to land a 6ft 3in colossus after a £10million bid was rejected.
