Exclusive: Shrewsbury open talks to sign Stoke City defender
Shrewsbury Town have opened talks to sign Stoke City defender Josh Tymon, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The 21-year-old could leave the bet365 Stadium before Monday’s transfer deadline in search of regular first team football.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Shrewsbury have moved for the left-back with a view to taking him on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.
Tymon has made 14 appearances in the Championship this term, 10 of which were starts.
He produced a number of eye-catching performances for Michael O’Neill’s side last year and played an integral part in EFL Cup wins against Wolves and Aston Villa.
However, game time has been hard to come by over the past month, following the return Joe Allen, Sam Clucas and John Obi Mikel from injury.
His last start came on 19 December – a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers in the league.
A defender by trade, Tymon is a very versatile player who has been utilised as a left-back, a left-winger and a centre-midfielder this season.
The former England Under-20 international joined Stoke City from Hull in July 2017 on a free transfer and was loaned out to MK Dons six months later.
The full-back also enjoyed a loan spell at Portuguese outfit Famalicao before breaking into the Potters first team.
He could now be set for his third loan spell away from the bet365 Stadium with League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town.
This comes after Football Insider broke the news on Wednesday evening that the Shrews have agreed to sign striker Will Grigg from Sunderland.
The Shropshire outfit have seen off competition from Salford City and MK Dons to land the Norther Ireland international.
In other news, Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers have opened preliminary talks with Everton over signing Anthony Gordon this month.
