Exclusive: Southampton’s board holding Russell Martin talks
Southampton’s hierarchy are set to meet to discuss Russell Martin’s future at the club, sources have told Football Insider.
The 38-year-old is fighting for his job as the Saints remain winless in the Premier League after the opening seven weeks.
It is set to be a key couple of weeks post-international break for Martin as he must start to turn things around at St Mary’s Stadium.
Martin still has some credit in the bank after getting the Saints promoted back to the top flight, but the poor results are putting his future at risk.
The manner of the defeats are raising alarm bells among Southampton decision-makers, with the club having conceded 15 goals already this season.
Sources have told Football Insider that if results haven’t improved by the next international window in November, then a decision could be made to bring in a new manager.
Southampton are struggling to find potential Russell Martin replacements
One of the big saving graces for Martin at the moment is the lack of available managers who the club could turn to if they were to sack him.
There isn’t a big choice available to replace him right now, which could lead to Southampton’s hierarchy sticking faithful to the man who got them promoted.
But with Southampton currently 19th in the Premier League with only one point on the board, Martin will have to start producing results.

The Saints did take the lead against Arsenal this past weekend but were unable to hang on and ultimately lost 3-1.
Southampton have a crucial game against fellow newly promoted side Leicester City when club football returns after this international break.
