Exclusive: The two reasons Wolves have chosen Rob Edwards to be their manager

Wolves are finalising the appointment of Rob Edwards as they feel he can get the fans behind the team straight away, sources have told Football Insider.

The hierarchy at the club also believe that the Middlesbrough boss will secure instant promotion back to the Premier League if the Midlands club are relegated this season.

Edwards is close to a full agreement with Wolves after he was stood down from the touchline for Boro’s 2-1 win over Birmingham City at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday (8 November).

Currently, the Midlands side are rock bottom of the Premier League, with just two points from their first 11 games of the season.

Rob Edwards has Championship promotion experience

Edwards spent four years at Wolves as a player and had a spell as interim manager there back in 2016, taking charge of two Championship games after the sacking of Walter Zenga.

The 42-year-old is from the area, supports Wolves and has very close links to the club, as a result of his two spells at Molineux.

Midway through the 2022-23 campaign, Edwards took over at Luton Town, leading them to Championship play-off glory and promotion to the Premier League just six months after his appointment.

It means that the former Wales international has prior experience taking a club up from the second tier, which could be invaluable if Wolves are unable to avoid the drop this season.

Middlesbrough eye Rob Edwards replacement

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough are set to sound out Millwall manager Alex Neil about becoming their new manager, sources have told Football Insider.

Sources say Boro have set their sights on Neil as their first-choice target, and plan to make contact with the 44-year-old to assess his interest in the role.

The Millwall boss has led his side to seven wins from 15 games so far this season, as they currently sit sixth in the Championship.

Middlesbrough are four points ahead of the Lions in second, occupying the final automatic promotion spot.
