Exclusive: Tottenham plot Guglielmo Vicario axe, timeframe emerges for replacement’s arrival
Tottenham may line up a replacement for Guglielmo Vicario in next summer’s transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
The Italian’s performances have come under scrutiny so far this season, but it is understood that Thomas Frank remains in support of his first-choice goalkeeper for now.
Vicario has made high-profile errors for Tottenham already in 2025-26, but sources say that the North London outfit are likely to find the market too difficult to secure a replacement for him in January.
The 29-year-old is a key figure in the dressing room for the Lilywhites, who have seen the resolve of their senior group questioned again after a 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Frank and Co. have no plans to axe Vicario this winter, but a replacement could be sourced in the summer if his displays do not consistently improve.

Antonin Kinsky not seen as a viable replacement at Tottenham
Vicario was part of another Tottenham breakdown during their heavy defeat at the City Ground last weekend.
The gloveman put Archie Gray in trouble with an unnecessary pass inside his own half, and the youngster gave possession away and ultimately ended up gifting Callum Hudson-Odoi the opener for the hosts.
It was yet another lapse in concentration from Vicario, who has drawn an increasing amount of anger from the Spurs faithful as the campaign has worn on.
Frank has a young backup option at his disposal in Antonin Kinsky, but he is still seen as little more than an option for the domestic cup competitions at the moment.
The Czech stopper played six Premier League games during an injury lay-off for Vicario last term, but he has quickly been demoted to second-choice once again following Frank’s arrival.

The 22-year-old is seen as a talented young prospect, but right now, there remains no debate that the Italian is the number one.
Guglielmo Vicario still ranks among Premier League’s best for key stat
Tottenham fans have been quick to criticise Vicario for the errors that he has made this season, but there has been little praise when he has put in strong displays.
| Stats | Vicario Total | League Rank |
| Clean Sheets | 5 | =6th |
| Save Percentage | 69.1% | 8th |
| Goals Prevented | 2.5 | =3rd |
| Saves per 90 | 2.9 | =7th |
The former Empoli man has had an inconsistent campaign so far, but he still ranks among the best goalkeepers in the Premier League when it comes to goals prevented.
His current tally for 2025-26 stands at an impressive 2.5, which ranks him as the division’s joint-third best ‘keeper in that department, alongside Sunderland’s Robin Roefs.
However, with his save percentage having now slipped below 70 per cent, and Tottenham with just one clean sheet in the league since October, the scrutiny is unsurprising.
Frank has endured a stop-and-start season since he joined Spurs in the summer, and his goalkeeper has been symptomatic of his team’s struggle to find consistency so far.
