Exclusive: Trent Alexander-Arnold return verdict issued amid messy Liverpool divorce

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s possible return to Liverpool has been assessed as the fallout continues over his Real Madrid move, by Glen Johnson.

The former Anfield right-back told Football Insider exclusively that he would be surprised if the 26-year-old current star at the same position made an emotional return in the future after his move to La Liga on a free transfer.

Real Madrid are attempting to agree a seven-figure deal with Liverpool to seal the full-back’s early exit ahead of this summer’s Club World Cup, which has infuriated an emotional fanbase even further.

Despite coming through the academy, making 353 first-team appearances, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League, he was greeted by boos as he entered the pitch against Arsenal.

Liverpool fans make feelings known over Alexander-Arnold exit

Liverpool fans have already turned their attention to Alexander-Arnold’s replacement ahead of the summer transfer window, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong heavily linked with Anfield.

In addition to the Dutch international, Conor Bradley has been learning from his predecessor for the past two seasons, with many wanting Arne Slot to give the 21-year-old a chance in the starting lineup.

A small minority of supporters have already put Alexander-Arnold in the same bracket as Steven Gerrard and John Barnes, but his inevitable exit has seen the majority of voices turn on the talent.

There have been suggestions that the full-back could, one day, return to Merseyside after years of success with Los Blancos, but Johnson has quickly shut down those ideas before he has even left.

Liverpool academy graduate unlikely to return to Anfield

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, via TG Casino, Johnson poured water on the chances of a Liverpool reunion with Alexander-Arnold:

“I doubt it. You’ve just got to move on and let it go. You never know, but I’d be very surprised if he ended back at Liverpool at some point.”

It would be a very depressing end to the graduate’s time at Anfield, but with Real Madrid calling his name, fans will need to put the disappointment of his exit behind them.
