Noel Whelan has been left scratching his head at who Marcelo Bielsa will axe from the Leeds United starting XI against Hull City tonight.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds striker admitted he was “baffled” as to who will drop out of the side to accommodate the return of Kalvin Phillips.
The midfield anchorman missed Saturday’s 2-0 win at Huddersfield Town due to a one-match suspension but Bielsa revealed at his media conference yesterday the key man “comes back to play” and “there is someone who is going to leave the team but I have not decided who yet”.
Ben White is set to drop back into his normal centre-back role, which means one of the stars of Saturday will miss out at Elland Road tonight.
At the weekend, Gaetano Berardi and Luke Ayling formed a makeshift central defensive partnership, flanked by Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski in the full-back positions.
“It’s a tough one for Bielsa and I don’t know who he will leave out, I’m a bit baffled on that one,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“Bielsa doesn’t normally drop anyone from the side, unless it’s due to an injury or suspension.
“The only time we really see it happen is when Liam Cooper has recovered from one of his injuries and Berardi drops out.
“You can’t leave out Alioski, as he gives you that attacking threat, Dallas has been outstanding this season…[Mateusz] Klich starts every game.
“You can’t leave out Helder Costa, Pablo [Hernandez] is the one who makes things happen. It’s not obvious who to leave out.”
Three players who definitely won’t make it are Adam Forshaw, Jamie Shackleton and Tyler Roberts, who have all been ruled out due to injury.
