'Absolutely Brilliant' - Exclusive: Whelan in awe of one Leeds player who started today

Noel Whelan has been left in awe of Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich after making his 84th consecutive league start against Huddersfield.

The former Leeds striker and lifelong fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 29-year-old has shown an outstanding attitude on and off the pitch to remain fit and firing for Marcelo Bielsa.

The Polish international’s impressive run of starts stretches back to the opening day of last season.

Having once been deemed surplus to requirements at Elland Road, Whelan says that Klich has shown not only remarkable effort to turn his career around.

Whelan told Football Insider: “It shows how professional he is and how well he keeps himself in check fitness-wise.

“It’s very rare we see players like that play that many continuous games without any injury or suspension. It’s credit to his discipline on the field, it’s credit to the way he looks after himself off the field.

“He’s back in the goals as well, creating again which is fantastic, absolutely brilliant. It’s great to see and he’s been integral over the past season and a half now.

“Hopefully he stays fit until the end because he’s got a massive part to play. There’s no one else in the midfield I’d say that can do the work that he does.”

Klich has missed just one game across all competitions this season, Bielsa leaving him out of the League Cup defeat to Stoke City.

Saturday’s runout means he is now just one appearance away from 100 games for Leeds.
