Exclusive: Whelan bouncing as Leeds in chase to sign PL 28-yr-old 'Leader'
Marcelo Bielsa has been urged to add quality centre-halves if Leeds are to have any hope of surviving in the Premier League by Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Jason Jones, the former Leeds forward delivered his verdict as Shane Duffy became the latest defender to be linked to Leeds.
The Scottish Mail reported that the Whites have joined the race for the 28-year-old who would favour a move to Celtic, the club he supported growing up.
Football Insider revealed that Neil Lennon had made signing Duffy his top priority but the defender’s wage demands are the main hurdle stopping a deal.
Asked by Football Insider whether Shane Duffy would improve Leeds, Whelan said: “Gaetano Berardi is out for a long time so we don’t really have any recognised centre-halves bar the young lads coming through.
“With Premier League football and the players you’re coming up against you’re going to get found out pretty quickly.

“We need experience and Shane Duffy has played in the Premier League, he knows what it’s all about. He’s a competitor, a leader and I’m sure lots of clubs are looking at him.
“He’s one player I look at him and think ‘yeah if we can add him to the squad along with another centre-half then we’re covering two positions’.
“We do need quality, we can’t get away with average in the Premier League, you’ll soon get found out.
“We don’t want to be a one season wonder, working so hard to get into the Premier League. We’ve got to make sure we buy the right players and don’t overextend ourselves with the money we’ve got.”
Duffy has 96 Premier League appearances under his belt for the Seagulls and has represented the Republic of Ireland 33 times.
