Noel Whelan claims that Barnsley duo Mallik Wilks and Aapo Halme will have a point to prove to Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa on Sunday after leaving Elland Road this summer.
The former Leeds striker and lifelong fan of the club, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the Tykes duo will be desperate to send a message when their old side visit Oakwell in a lunchtime kick-off.
Whelan says that emotions will be running high for the former Leeds pair and that they might have to try to manage their feelings to perform at their best on Sunday.
Whelan told Football Insider: “Mallik will be out there to prove a point. It’s no different to when any player leaves a club, against your old team that you’ve just left, everybody has a point to prove.
“What they (Wilks and Halme) have to do is maybe not worry about the game and who they’re playing against. You’ve got to manage the occasion and your emotions. There will be more emotions on those two players, Wilks and Halme, than there will be on the Leeds United players.
“There’s pressure on everybody.”
Halme played a total of five times for Leeds’ first-team before leaving, going on to feature four times, twice in the starting XI, across all competitions for Barnsley so far.
Wilks meanwhile has been a mainstay for the Tykes, playing in every one of the club’s seven games across the league and the League Cup, just once coming on as a substitute.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider that one player at Elland Road is causing Bielsa a “huge problem”.
