Noel Whelan claims that rival clubs will be queuing up to sign West Brom loanee Matheus Pereira if the Baggies do not activate the optional purchase clause reported in his contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker and Championship expert says that the attacking midfielder will have caught the eye of players and managers alike with his performances for Slaven Bilic’s side, netting three goals and contributing seven assists.
As reported by the Birmingham Mail, the Hawthorns outfit have the option to sign the 23-year-old for £9million after his loan spell from Sporting CP, with terms agreed in principle with the player over turning his stay permanent.
Whelan says that Pereira’s bright performances at the midlands side will have brought him to the attention of a number of clubs who will be circling to sign him if the Baggies pass up the opportunity.
Asked if he thought West Brom would trigger the clause, Whelan told Football Insider: “Well, you’d like to think so, if not, somebody else will.
“If you keep putting in performances like that, other players will be talking about him, coming up against him, other managers will be talking about him, other clubs will be talking about this great player.
“He’s not signed to anyone, he belongs to Sporting Lisbon. When you put in certain performances you catch the eye of certain teams and certain managers.
Pereira, who is a versatile attacker who can play on either wing or through the middle, has played 27 times for his parent club since arriving from Brazil and coming through the club’s youth system.
He also has experience of playing in Germany’s top flight, having spent time on loan with FC Nuremberg.
In other West Brom news, Whelan suggests that the Baggies’ squad will be disappointed with one of their summer signings.
