Noel Whelan has revealed he expects three Leeds United players to be axed from the team after the international break.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward and lifelong fan believes Marcelo Bielsa will shake up the side that lost to Swansea City at home last weekend.
Whelan expects Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison and Ezgjan Alioski to drop out of the starting XI for the trip to Barnsley on Sunday of next week.
The pundit believes they will be replaced by summer forward arrivals Helder Costa and Eddie Nketiah as well as left-back Barry Douglas.
“Marcelo Bielsa will start again during the international break and have a look at making changes,” Whelan told Football Insider. “The first change I would expect to see is Eddie Nketiah starting. It’s time for him to be given a go.
“It’s the same with Helder Costa, who has also looked good coming on from the bench. Patrick Bamford should drop down for a game, as well as Jack Harrison.
“Bamford has not done a great deal wrong but Leeds need to freshen up a little bit and Barnsley will be a stubborn, physical, well-drilled side.
“Leeds need some guile and cleverness, and Nketiah and Costa would provide that. I would also expect Douglas to come in for Alioski at left-back as he started the season before injury.”
Bamford and Harrison have both started all six of Leeds’ Championship matches this season, while Alioski has started three of those games.
Costa and Nketiah are still waiting for their full United league debuts, although they have been used as substitutes as well as starting in the League Cup.
