Noel Whelan has tipped Marcelo Bielsa to start Leeds United record signing Rodrigo Moreno against Liverpool on Saturday at the expense of Patrick Bamford.
The former Whites and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that “everybody wants to see” Rodrigo, 29, and said he would be “very surprised” if he was on the bench.
The Spain international played the full 90 minutes for his country last week and grabbed a 95th minute assist in a 1-1 draw with Germany.
Rodrigo was signed last month in a club-record £27million deal from Valencia where he scored 59 goals in 220 appearances.
Leeds travel to Merseyside on Saturday to face Liverpool in their eagerly anticipated return to Premier League action.
When asked by Football Insider who he would like to see start up front, Whelan said:
“I think he will start Rodrigo. You have got to just do it.
“When you pay out £27million for a player there is no point having him on the bench, especially if you want to hit the ground running. You cannot keep your best players on the bench. It is as simple as that.
“He is fit, he has been training and played a full 90 for the Spain so I would be very surprised if I see Rodrigo sitting on the bench.
“If Marcelo Bielsa starts Rodrigo (and benches Patrick Bamford) nobody is going to be questioning that. He is a Spain international and everybody wants to see him.
Bielsa confirmed today that Rodrigo and fellow new signing Robin Koch were fit for the trip to Anfield, he said: “They are in very good physical condition ahead of the game.”
Koch was signed from Freiburg for a fee close to £12million earlier in the window and is expected to start alongside Liam Cooper in defence.
In other Leeds United news, Danny Mills has told Football Insider that he expects Marcelo Bielsa to leave out big-name for Liverpool clash.
