Noel Whelan raved about Everton midfielder Andre Gomes ahead of Marco Silva’s side hosting West Ham on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Coventry City and Leeds United attacker revealed that he thought Gomes was a game-changing player for the Toffees as he is capable of doing everything with the ball.
The 26-year-old has only managed to feature in five of the Toffees’ first eight league games of the season due to a rib injury causing him to miss the losses to Sheffield United, Bournemouth and Manchester City.
Whelan shared that Gomes was the type of player who could control the match for the Toffees and stated that his presence allowed the club’s more attacking-midfielders to venture forward.
When asked if Gomes is a gamechanger for the Toffees due to his ability to dominate the midfield, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah, I think you need him in the side.
“I think he gives a nice balance to Everton’s midfield, he’s one of those players who can control the game as he is big, strong and can do everything with the ball.
“He has nice range of passes, he’s good at tackling in there, he just can control that midfield area and he’s a leader.
“I think the midfield needs that sort of player as it allows Bernard and those sort of players to push on into that final third.
“If he was fit, in my opinion, he’d be straight on the teamsheet.”
The Portuguese midfielder did return to action for the Toffees ahead of the international break against Burnley as he managed to make a six-minute cameo.
Gomes joined Everton on a permanent basis in the summer from Spanish giants Barcelona after spending his 2018/19 campaign on loan at Goodison Park.
