Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United “missed a trick” in not signing Callum Robinson in January as he continues to impress at West Brom.
The former United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, confessed he wishes Marcelo Bielsa had signed the 25-year-old instead of Jean-Kevin Augustin last month.
Robinson arrived at West Brom from Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season and scored in last weekend’s 2-2 home draw with Nottingham Forest.
The Republic of Ireland international has started all four games since arriving at The Hawthorns whilst Jean-Kevin Augustin is still waiting for his first start for The Whites with question marks over his fitness.
Whelan bemoaned the fact Bielsa did not opt for a player like Robinson who was ready to have an immediate impact in the race for promotion.
“I think we missed a trick in not signing him,” the ex-Coventry player told Football Insider.
“He knows the league. A good strong player. West Brom saw it and we did not.
“You want a player that is ready to come straight in and play.
“There is one right there and we have got someone called Augustin who has played 3 games in 8 months. He is not up to speed, not match fit. There is a lot of work in progress.
“How much can we get out of him between now and the end of the season? Robinson is hitting the ground running. Augustin is still getting his fitness and that is not helping us.
“We need a player like Robinson – ready to go and banging goals in. They got the upper hand on that. They signed a player ready.”
Augustin arrived at Elland Road on loan from Red Bull Leipzig after his previous short term agreement with AS Monaco was terminated.
The striker has represented France at every youth level and won the Golden Boot at the Under-19 World Cup.
In other Leeds United news, Danny Mills has told Football Insider he knows the real reason why Poveda is not playing.
