Noel Whelan believes Leeds United will be working on how to stop Liverpool as they step up preparations for their first Premier League game in 16 years.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds forward delivered his verdict as Tyler Roberts returned to Leeds after withdrawing from the Wales squad with injury.
The Whites confirmed earlier this week that Roberts had been recalled from international duty and that he would recover at Thorp Arch.
Leeds travel to the Premier League champions on 12 September with the game being broadcast live on BT Sport.
A host of Whites first-team stars have been away on international duty including new signings Rodrigo and Robin Koch.
The pair faced each other on Thursday night as Rodrigo provided a last minute assistant as his Spain side earned a 1-1 draw with Germany.
They will train with their new teammates for the first time next week just days before the game with Liverpool.
Whelan told Football Insider: “Look, we’re a week away, we want to try and manage these players and the majority of the hard work is done, now it’s about keeping them ticking over.
“Try and get that football a little bit sharper, keep them sharper, keep them well, keep them conditioned but keep them hungry now.
“It’s about getting through this week, it’ll be match preparation and it will all be gauged on Liverpool and how we can stop them and key players in their side and how we can influence out game.
“It won’t be too much of a strenuous week in the lead up, it will be more of an intelligent week and how to implement their style on the game as well.”
