Whelan Exclusive: Senior star to be axed & one rare start in Leeds XI v Derby
Noel Whelan suggests that Barry Douglas chould be handed a rare start when Leeds United take on Derby County on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker admits he wants to see Ben White moved back to a centre-half role and suggests bringing the left-back into the side to make it happen.
The 22-year-old defender replaced the injured Kalvin Phillips in central midfield against Barnsley on Thursday, with Gaetano Berardi starting in the heart of the defence.
However, Whelan believes that Bielsa should axe the Swiss defender, replace White with Stuart Dallas in the middle and bring Douglas in for what would only be his sixth league start of the season.
Whelan told Football Insider: “You can’t replace Kalvin, that’s just a fact and I would love to keep Ben White next to Liam Cooper because I just think they’ve got a really good relationship, there’s a great balance there.
“I can’t see why Matusz Klich can’t maybe play that Kalvin Phillips role and squeeze Stuart Dallas into midfield to bring Barry Douglas in on that left-hand side who had a great time the last time he played.

“I think that might give us a little bit more balance in the side.”
Douglas has played second fiddle to both Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski at left-back this season.
His last start came against Blackburn earlier this month, but he has been an unused substitute for the last two games.
