Noel Whelan has been left up in arms after hearing Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa speak about Ryan Edmondson’s future at the club.

The former Leeds forward and lifelong fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says the young hitman needs to be playing senior football after shining at under-23 level.

Bielsa confirmed at his press conference on Thursday that he had not considered sending the young striker out on loan despite his lack of first-team chances this season.

Whelan has blasted the fact the young talent is not being given a chance in the senior side and says ruling out a loan move is a farcical decision.

“I think it’s silly,” Whelan said when asked about Bielsa’s admission.

“If you’re not going to use him and he’s banging goals for fun in the under-23s, the only way to impress somebody is to go out on loan and do it at the highest level, wherever that might be – whether that be Championship, League One.

“Give him some real football time, progress him in his career and make him as a centre-forward in real football, in a man’s game rather than the under-23s. I don’t see the point in keeping somebody, don’t hold back in his career.

“Either put him in the first-team because he’s due that because of his goals and performances he’s put in or allow him to go out on loan.”

The 18-year-old has played just twice for the first-team since coming through the ranks at Elland Road, his debut coming in a 2-0 win over QPR back in May 2018.

The only other senior centre-forwards at the club are Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts, although the latter has been used primarily as an attacking midfielder by Bielsa.

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have been offered the opportunity to sign a Premier League striker.
