Birmingham City have agreed a late deal to re-sign Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter on loan, Football Insider understands.
The 23-year-old has been in-demand among Championship clubs ahead of today’s domestic transfer deadline, with Sheffield Wednesday among the sides chasing a deal for the centre-back.
However, a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Birmingham have won the race for the Blues’ academy graduate having already had him on loan for the 2019/20 campaign.
Clarke-Salter has played just twice for Chelsea’s senior side since breaking through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge and has spent nearly all of the last four seasons out on loan.
His first temporary move saw him join League One outfit Bristol Rovers for the whole of the 2016/17 campaign, where he made 13 appearances and scored his first senior goal in club football.
He spent the second half of the 2017/18 season with Sunderland as the Black Cats were relegated to the third tier of English football before he joined Vitesse Arnhem in the summer of 2018.
The defender established himself as a regular starter for the Dutch outfit as he missed just five games through injury in the league.
He is now set to return to Birmingham for the rest of the new campaign after he spent last season at St Andrew’s.
The Chelsea loanee played a total of 23 times across all competitions for the Midlands outfit and scored his only goal for the club against Millwall last November.
