Rangers striker Michael O’Halloran’s agent Kenny Moyes was on damage limitation duties when he tried to pass off the striker’s appearance in the Celtic end of Saturday’s Scottish Cup final between the Hoops and Motherwell.
Moyes claimed O’Halloran “didn’t realise” he would be surrounded by Celtic fans when he collected tickets for the showpiece final, as quoted by the Daily Record, and insisted that in hindsight, it doesn’t look too good.
O’Halloran’s attendance at Hampden sparked an angry response from Gers fans but his laughable attempt at an excuse does the striker absolutely no favours whatsoever.
Moyes even tried to pass the blame to the Scottish FA for sitting O’Halloran in with Celtic fans and claimed O’Halloran didn’t realise until it was “too late” that he was in with the Celtic fans.
On first read through, any reasonable person would have thought Moyes’ attempts at deflecting the blame onto anyone not named Michael O’Halloran were a poor attempt at comedy but incredibly, they are genuine comments.
It should be said that – despite attempts on social media to portry it otherwise – Gers fans’ anger has nothing to do with O’Halloran’s religion (the striker is a Celtic supporting catholic) but everything to do with him sitting in with the Gers’ biggest rivals at a cup final.
Hearts fans would be furious if one of their players was pictured supporting Hibs at a cup final, Man United fans would be furious if one of their’s was in with City or Liverpool fans and Arsenal fans would be spitting feathers if Mesut Ozil was spotted in with the Spurs fans.
Showing up at Hampden isn’t the first time the former St. Johnstone star has annoyed Rangers fans after failing to show up for an Under-20s game last year that he was scheduled to start in.
There’s maybe some sort of ulterior motive at play here from the striker – but whatever it is he is doing, it isn’t doing him any favours and is only marking him out as a player that fans simply don’t want near their club.
In other Rangers transfer news, the club are in hot pursuit of a 6’4″ colossus who could be signing of the season.
