Expert: Aaron Mooy backed to quit Celtic and retire
Aaron Mooy could leave Celtic and retire this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie suggested that injury issues have taken a toll on Mooy’s playing ability.
The 32-year-old is entering the final 12 months of his Parkhead contract after putting pen to paper on a two-year deal following his departure from Shanghai Port last summer.
The midfielder made 42 appearances across all competitions under fellow Australian Ange Postecoglou but was held back by injury towards the end of the season.
Now, according to Australian outlet FTBL (22 June), Mooy could be hanging up his boots this summer off the back of Celtic’s domestic triumph, Postecoglou’s departure and amid reports of ongoing hamstring and back issues.
Australia national team coach Graham Arnold has previously revealed that the was on the brink of quitting last summer after an unhappy stretch in China.
When asked if Mooy is considering calling time on his footballing career, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He came through that purple patch and he was playing really well then he came back and he was not the same player,
“He was making passes without looking, he was getting caught out. When you are not fit you are not sharp in your mind.

“If you are worrying about an injury you are not thinking about what is going on around you whereas when you are fully fit you can see the bigger picture.
“There is no doubt that he is a good player but he might now be thinking it is time.“
