Expert issues ‘incredible’ Rooney verdict after Everton update from Wallace

Wayne Rooney has done “an incredible job” at Derby County but a move to Everton may come too soon, according to Paul Robinson.

The former England teammate of Rooney, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said “there’s a huge difference” between managing the two clubs.

The Blues are on the hunt for a new manager after Rafael Benitez’s dismissal was confirmed on Sunday.

According to The Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace (18 January), Rooney is set to be interviewed for the job.

The ex-Toffees captain is on a four-man shortlist for the position along with Frank Lampard.

Robinson cited Lampard’s move from Derby to Chelsea when discussing Rooney’s suitability for the vacant post.

“There are a lot of factors to take into consideration with this one,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Rooney is in his infancy as a manager. He’s been incredible at Derby with his hands tied behind his back but there is a huge difference between managing Derby and managing Everton.

“We saw Frank Lampard make the move from Derby to Chelsea and that didn’t work out.

Everton

“Wayne is just cutting his teeth. Does he have the team around him to take on the big challenge of Everton? He has the experience of dealing with the board off the field but I think it might be too soon. We won’t know until he’s given an opportunity though.

“The fans need their club back. It’s a club with amazing history and then need to be united again.”
