Expert: Newcastle expected to sign 'highly regarded' Jordan Hackett 'soon'

Newcastle will sign Tottenham Under 18 defender Jordan Hackett “soon”.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

As revealed by Wenham on 13 May that Hackett, 18, will be released when his contract expires on 30 June.

The defender is already on trial at Newcastle United and Wenham expects him to join permanently “soon”.

“It’s a funny one with Jordan, he is a decent left-back,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He was a very highly regarded player but he picked up an injury while playing for England Under 18s against Scotland in the summer.

“That left him ruled out for about three months. He has been really unlucky as I thought he might get another one-year deal.

“That won’t be the case because Tottenham have some other decent left-backs coming through so there is no real pathway for him.

“That’s why he has been allowed to leave. The fact he is already on trial at Newcastle tells me he will be picked up very quickly.

“I don’t think he will be off to one of those free agent scouts. I think Newcastle will get him.

“He can play left-back or centre-back and he has a good height to him. He is decent from set-pieces so I can see Newcastle snapping him up soon.

“He is well worth a gamble on a two-year deal.”

Hackett made 11 appearances in the Under 18 Premier League for Spurs this season.

Newcastle have committed to improving their youth facilities after years of neglect under Mike Ashley’s ownership.
