Expert pleads for Aston Villa U-turn after source's John McGinn reveal

Frank McAvennie hopes John McGinn remains an Aston Villa player despite Steven Gerrard not being convinced by him.

That’s according to former Villa hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s future.

A Villa source has told Football Insider (20 June) that the club will listen to offers this summer for McGinn and he is far from an untouchable despite being a nailed-on starter during his four years at the club.

The source explained that McGinn is not regarded as the easiest player to manage and the newly-appointed QPR manager Michael Beale was said to have had tense relationships with a number of senior Villa stars – McGinn among them – last season.

Despite this, McAvennie hopes McGinn remains at Villa for the 2022-23 season.

“He’s a big fish at Villa,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s whether he wants to go and play in Europe or not. I think Villa could be getting up there with West Ham next season.

“They have made some good signings but it has to be better next season. Otherwise, you risk your best players leaving.

“I’m a big fan of McGinn and I hope he stays around because I think it is an exciting time to be a Villa player.”

McGinn started 35 of Aston Villa’s 38 Premier League games in the 2021-22 season as they finished 14th.

The Glasgow-born ace moved to the club from Hibs in the summer of 2018 and has made 147 appearances across all competitions.
