Expert: ‘Something not right’ at Tottenham after Djed Spence dig

Paul Robinson has suggested “something is not quite right” with Djed Spence at Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs keeper is worried for Spence’s development due to his lack of game time under Antonio Conte.

The 22-year-old has made just one appearance for Conte’s side so far this season after joining from Middlesbrough in the summer.

As reported by the Daily Mail (2 October), Spence’s sister took a dig at Conte after the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal by saying “things could have been different” if right-back had started the game.

Robinson questioned the reasons behind Spurs’ decision not to send the defender out on loan.

“You question why they bought him and brought him in,” he told Football Insider.

He had such a good season on loan last year. If you pay a transfer fee for a player with that much quality and that promise to then sit him on the bench. I don’t know whether there is more to it, whether there is something that is not right on the training ground.

But if you have the intention of bringing a player like that in to the squad and not using him, you have an immediate plan for him to go out on loan, you almost sign him with a view to go out on loan. But for him to come in the way he did, off the back of a fantastic season last year, and to not be anywhere near the squad, you question what say the manager had in the transfer.

There is something that is amiss there, something is not quite right. It is not going to do his development as a player any good to sit on the bench and watch three players in front of him.”
